The Howling (1981)
Directed by Joe Dante
Written by John Sayles and Terence H. Winkless
IMDB
A newswoman goes to a porno store to meet a guy who wants to confess to a slew of murders. He turns into a werewolf when she enters the booth he’s in and she gets amnesia. Her doctor suggests that she and her husband head to a rehabilitation center where the inhabitants turn out to be werewolves.
Werewolf movies tend to be boring and this is no exception. What I don’t like about these types of movies is that they focus on the humans turning into wolves and never on the action. In this movie it is kind of cool when they turn into the wolves, but it isn’t that cool. The plot that takes up most of the movie isn’t very interesting. We don’t see werewolves for more than 20 minutes of the movie I’d guess. I found the movie boring.

Ace is given a whistle from his favorite band, Guitar Wolf. When he blows into the whistle, it summons them. When zombies start attacking he has no choice but to call for Guitar Wolf. Ace is also falling in love with Tobio, a trangendered individual.
A really bizarre but entertaining and enthralling film. The effects are pretty good, especially the zombie effects. The zombies looks pretty cool. Guitar Wolf is a Japanese garage rock band, though I have never heard of them. They are fine. Lots of heads explode in this one.

Tucker & Dale vs. Evil (2010)
Directed by Eli Craig
Written by Eli Craig and Morgan Jurgenson
IMDB
A very funny twist on the hillbilly hunting teens/college students in the woods horror movie. Tucker and Dale are hanging out at their vacation house in the woods, and some college kids are on a camping trip. The college kids think that Tucker and Dale are psychopath murderers. The college kids go skinny dipping and one hits her head (Katrina Bowden from “30 Rock”). Tucker and Dale are fishing and Dale rescues her. At the sight of Tucker and Dale putting her into their boat, the other kids take off. Then through a series of events, the kids drop one-by-one by accidental death.
A modern horror/comedy masterpiece. Thoroughly entertaining, gory, and very funny. The way that it turns the genre on its head is extremely clever. A must see for horror fans and comedy fans who can tolerate gore.

Final Destination 5 (2011)
Directed by Steven Quale
Written by Eric Heisserer
IMDB
On a business retreat, a man has a premonition of a bridge collapsing and everybody dying. He stops the bus and runs, along with some others. Then death chases him and his friends down because “he cheated death.”
The “Final Destination” movies are completely silly. I guess they are technically horror movies, but they aren’t scary at all. They are pretty funny, though. I laughed several times at this movie, especially during the opening scene.
These movies aren’t for everybody. My wife flat-out refuses to watch any of them. I think she would enjoy them, but it might mess with her head. If you can stomach the gore, which there is a decent amount of, and can handle people dying constantly, then this is a fun movie.

The Thing (1982)
Directed by John Carpenter
Written by Bill Lancaster
IMDB
John Carpenter presents this icy sci-fi/horror film. An American research base in Antarctica finds a dog running outside. They bring it in and soon find out that it is being inhabited by an alien that can replicate its host.
A very gross and excellent horror film. I am not a fan of the original Halloween film (sorry), but this flick was excellent. The monster/alien is super disgusting. My wife and our friend Sara were freaking out during the movie, which made it so much more fun. Sara can really get engrossed in a movie (even Marmaduke!), so watching stuff with her is always fun.
This is a perfect Halloween film. It's on Netflix streaming. What are you assholes waiting for?

Red State (2011)
Directed by Kevin Smith
Written by Kevin Smith
IMDB
Kevin Smith's independently made horror film managed to surprise me. For starters, it is actually somewhat scary/creepy. The film is about a group of fundamental Christians who kill homosexuals and the like. Secondly it is actually very well made.
I have been critical of Kevin Smith's directing style at times. "Cop Out" was a complete mess. I really did not expect Kevin Smith to be able to pull off a movie like "Red State." He did an amazing job. This movie is going to be popular. If it had gotten a theatrical wide-release it might have been Smith's biggest hit to date.
Kevin Smith has made some great films, don't get me wrong ("Clerks," "Clerks 2," and "Dogma"). He has also made some kind of shitty ones ("Cop Out," "Mallrats" and "Jersey Girl"). I wasn't sure where this film was going to fit into his filmography. I'd say that it might be second to "Clerks" overall. I enjoy some of his silly comedies over "Red State," but I'm a comedy kind of guy.
The performances in "Red State" are completely top-notch. Michael Parks is amazing as the preacher of the hate-mongering church. He deserves a nomination for something for his performance.
This film is streaming exclusively on Netflix right now. It's nearing Halloween. Watch this film.

A Nightmare on Elm Street 4: The Dream Master (1988)
Directed by Renny Harlin
Written by Brian Helgeland, Jim Wheat and Ken Wheat
IMDB
Freddy is back to take out the remaining Dream Warriors from the previous films. The girl who was played by Patricia Arquette but is now played by Tuesday Knight (awesome name) passes on her ability to pull people into her dreams to her good friend Alice. Alice must take on Freddy Krueger.
At this point, this is the worst of the A Nightmare on Elm Street series. It is not that bad, though. It just seems kind of watered down. There's no real scares and the blood is kept to a minimum. Freddy has a few good one-liners, though.
I probably will not be watching this a second time.

A Nightmare on Elmstreet (1984)
Directed by Wes Craven
Written by Wes Craven

One of the all time greatest horror films.
Freddy Krueger was a child murderer who got let out of prison on a technicality (a misplaced signature on a warrant. The neighborhood people decide to take the law into their own hands and kill him. Now he's back via their children's nightmares. Whatever happens in their REM cycles will manifest it in real life.
This film is very creepy and awesome. Some of it is really gross even. The score is haunting and perfect for a horror film. It builds crazy tension. Freddy doesn't show as much personality in this film. No smart ass one liners from him, sadly.

Intruder (1989)

Directed by Scott Spiegel

I recently purchased the "Pulp Fiction" DVD. One of the extras on it is an appearance from Quentin Tarrantino on "The Charlie Rose Show." During this interview he discusses this film and meeting the producer (possibly the writer/director) and describes it as "The Cohen bros. doing a slasher flick." So, naturally I had to see it.
The first thing that got me about this film was how good the camera work was for a low-budget piece. Some of the angles and shots are really inspired. Really good stuff.
The plot: a grocery store is about to go out of business. The night the manager tells the crew this, a mysterious string of murders occur in a slasher-like fashion. A cashier's ex-boyfriend shows up before the murders begin and he is the main suspect.
The story is fine. The camera work is fantastic. Dan Hicks is awesome as the owner (spoiler)gone insane. Ted Raimi and Bruce Campbell both show up in small parts. What is not to love, really? This is very worth checking out and is streaming on Netflix!

From Dusk Til Dawn (1996)

Directed by Robert Rodriguez
Written by Quentin Tarantino
IMDB
This movie can be split into two halves and seem like completely different films. Tarantino and George Clooney are thiefs/killers on their way to rendezvous in Mexico with Cheech, who is paying them to do a job. They end up kidnapping Harvey Keitel and his two children (Juliette Lewis and Ernest Liu). They make their way to Mexico and go to the strip club they're supposed to meet up at. Then fucking vampires start attacking.
There is some weirdness in this movie for a Tarantino script, by which I mean one liners. The gore is off-the-charts, though. Rodriguez was probably the right choice to handle this movie, as he's a fantastic action director.
This flick is definitely uneven. In the past, that's what held me back from fully enjoying it, but I have come around on it. It's fun and silly. The vampire fighting is pretty awesome and the first half of the movie could have went into a different sort of movie for sure.

Night of the Comet (1984)
Directed by Thom EberhardtWritten by Thom Eberhardt
IMDB
I am not going to give this movie a very good rating, but I am also not going to flat-out bash it. It has its moments, but overall it is very ineffective.
Zombie films are perhaps my absolute favorite sub-genre of horror. What I really like about zombies is that they find strength in numbers. They are completely single-minded and stupid. All they want is to eat brains. Zombies are scary because they are overwhelming. The odds are always in their favor, but it is not impossible to overcome the odds with a little bit of cleverness and a badass weapon.
"Night of the Comet" is, in my opinion, technically not a zombie movie. There are some zombies in it--maybe 15, and that's being generous. There is no gore. Is there a shopping montage? You better believe it.
This is an 80s movie, and maybe it's a comedy. I'm not sure, because it's not funny. It is, at times, charming. Should a zombie movie be charming? Probably not. This movie is so close to being good, but it just can't pull it off. It might be the first movie to tackle the zombie/comedy (zombedy?), and it hits a lot of rough patches.
The plot: a comet shoots over the world (I guess) and vaporizes everybody. A few people have survived and even fewer have not been exposed to the comet. If you have been exposed, then you become a zombie, before ending up dust. A think tank accidentally got exposed and is trying to make a serum in order to heal themselves. Two sisters meet up with a dude named Hector at a radio station and they team up to fight the zombies, in theory.
Really, this has the makings of a good film, it just isn't pulled off correctly. It should be no surprise when you consider that the man who wrote and directed this picture is the same man who did the same for "Captain Ron."
I'm sure there's a group of people out there that love this movie. It's probably a cult classic in some circles. I found it to be disappointing. It had promise and did not deliver in laughs, terror, gore or zombies.

Bride of Frankenstein (1935)

Directed by James Whale
Written by William Hurlbut
IMDB
A true classic. Frankenstein's monster is on the loose. An even madder scientist comes to Frankenstein and tells him they need to create a woman for the monster in order to keep his destruction under control. He hesitantly agrees. The monster also befriends a blind man and learns to speak.
I liked it a lot except for one somewhat long filler scene. It was the introduction of the madder scientist. He has these jars with very tiny people in them that he is showing to Frankenstein. It goes on for way too long. Otherwise, this movie is pretty perfect.

Demons (1985)

Directed by Lamberto Bava
Written by Dario Argento, Lamberto Bava and Franco Ferrini
IMDB
A girl is handed a free movie ticket after she gets off of the subway. She takes her friend to the movie. A prostitute puts a decorative mask on in the lobby and is pricked by it. She turns into a demon and turns others into demons. Now, the audience of this movie is stuck in the theater and being killed by stupid demons.
This is a really shitty movie. There is barely anything positive to say about it, though it does feature a dude riding a motorcycle (in a theater) while chopping up demons with a sword! That is pretty fucking cool. The rest of this flick ranges from schlocky to boring. It is gross horror, not scary horror.
It opens pretty decently, much like the film they are watching in the theater. That is where the problems come in, actually. The characters in the movie are WATCHING A MOVIE for like 15 minutes. Then they start turning into bullshit demons. Fuck that and fuck this movie.
Waste of a Netflix DVD.

Night of the Creeps (1986)

Directed by Fred Dekker
Written by Fred Dekker
IMDB
A couple of dorky college kids are walking along the street, I guess the Greek strip, when they see a beautiful woman. J.C. goes and talks to her and tells her about his friend Chris who is in love-at-first-sight with her. Sadly she has a boyfriend, which Chris does not know. He thinks the only way to get her to fall for him is to join a frat. Her boyfriend is the head (or whatever the main frat guy is called). He says they need to dig up a corpse and put it on the steps of another frat. They head to the morgue, but end up in a cryogenics lab. They defrost a body, but it comes back to life and they bolt.
Now, after reading that how can you not immediately add it to the top of your Netflix queue? That is only the first maybe 15 minutes of this movie. The rest involves a hilarious tough-talking police officer, space slugs that turn people into zombies and Chris trying to find love with the girl of his dreams.
Such an awesome movie. The directing is really good and the acting is good enough. A very watchable late night style horror/comedy.

Rabid (1977)

Directed by David Cronenberg
Written by David Cronenberg
IMDB
A woman is involved in a motorcycle accident and has to get emergency surgery at a plastic surgery clinic. She develops a taste for blood and everybody she gets it from also develops a blood lust.
Eh, it sounded good, but I couldn't really get into it very much. I didn't dislike it, but it never drew me in. I'm sure there are people who do like it. Was sort of like an X-Files episode without the FBI.

The Grudge (2004)

Directed by Takashi Shimizu
Written by Stephen Susco
IMDB
Sarah Michelle Gellar stars in this remake of a Japanese horror movie. This is how IMDB describes the movie: "An American nurse living and working in Tokyo is exposed to a mysterious supernatural curse, one that locks a person in a powerful rage before claiming their life and spreading to another victim." The movie itself moved too slowly to keep my attention and I got very little of it, but I did know that SMG was a nurse and there was a curse. "She's a nurse with a curse" would have been a good tagline, actually.
Yeah, this movie is absolutely awful and boring. It's PG-13, which means no blood or actual terror. Everybody in this movie moves like their veins pump molasses. It's so fucking slow. The ending is complete shit, too. If you can even consider that an ending.

Sugar Hill (1984)

Directed by Paul Maslansky
Written by Tim Kelly
IMDB
When Diana "Sugar" Hill's husband is murdered by a the men he won't sell his club to, she heads to a voodoo priestess. She then becomes in command of an army of the dead and exacts her revenge.
Holy shit, this movie is stupid. First of all, going into this film I thought Sugar Hill would be fighting zombies instead of leading them. Also, it's a very loose PG. There is some minor swearing and lots of racial slurs.
Overall, I found this movie pretty disappointing. It could have been truly amazing if it was Sugar fighting zombies. Who the hell wants to command zombies? Plus it has that silly PG humor in it at times. It never gets too kidsy, but what's the point of a PG zombie movie? You leave all of the good stuff about zombies out of the movie.
6/10
C.H.U.D. (1984)

Directed by Douglas Cheek
Written by Parnell Hall
IMDB
Some people may know Parnell Hall as the author of the Puzzle Lady series of books. I know his as the author of the hit movie C.H.U.D.
C.H.U.D. is an acronym that stands for Cannibalistic Humanoid Underground Dwellers. Basically, they are mutated homeless people. They are zombies. They take a bite out of you, you become a C.H.U.D. yourself.
The worst part of this film is the periods in C.H.U.D. I don't want to type periods between letters. It's annoying.
I really enjoyed this film. My pal, Glenn, heard from his friend Stephen that this was a bad movie. Glenn's friend was wrong. This is a fun zombie movie, although a little slow at times. It even has a message: don't store toxic waste underground in New York City.
If you're a zombie movie fan, you should check this out. While C.H.U.D.s are technically monsters, they do share many similarities with zombies. Check it out.
7/10
Piranha (2010)

Directed by Alexandre Aja
Written by Pete Goldfinger and Josh Stolberg
IMDB
Piranha, originally in 3D, is a supercharged version of Jaws. Richard Dreyfuss even briefly plays his Jaws character before being eaten by piranhas. There are a lot of similarities, such as refusing to close the beach because of a profitable weekend. Yet, there are probably 10 times as many attacks/deaths. This is a pretty gory movie.
The cast of this movie is very odd. You have Elizabeth Shue and Adam Scott on a boat, Jerry O'Connell doing his best Joe Francis and hanging with Paul Scheer (his camera man)...on a boat and you have Ving Rhames killing piranhas with a motor he ripped off of a speedboat. It's a pretty fun and stupid movie, although the CGI kills some of the fun. It is worth a watch, but not worth going out of your way for.

Hausu (1977)

Directed by Nobuhiko Ôbayashi
Written by Chiho Katsura
AKA: House
IMDB
A group of teenage schoolgirls go to spend their summer vacation with one girl's aunt after losing their go-to house. Unfortunately, this house is haunted or the girl's aunt is a demon--I'm not wholly sure. Most of the girls have names that indicate a superpower or defining characteristic (Kung Fu, Gorgeous, Melody). Basically the house comes to life and eats or kills them.
Now this is a fucked up movie. It is hard to even really explain what makes this movie great. There are painted cutouts of the sky and trees in the middle of the forest that the girls stand in front of. A piano eats a girl. A head flies around and bits a girl on the ass. It is just insanity and I loved it.
This is a crazy movie that would be great to watch with a group of people. I watched it by myself, late at night. Basically, nobody will watch crazy movies with me. Very recommended.
