Jackie Chan plays Keung, which may be one of the few movie dubbed or in English where his character isn't "Jackie."  Keung has just come to America.  He is staying with his uncle, who is about to get married and owns a grocery store in the Bronx.  Jackie immediately has trouble with a motorcycle gang, but his problems get worse when he gets mixed up with the mafia.
I just reviewed "Hobo with a Shotgun" today and this movie hits with a better impact than that one.  This movie gives you moments of levity and some story between the enormous and numerous fighting and action sequences.
I was never too keen on this movie when it originally came out, even though I love Jackie Chan.  Now, I have a much higher opinion of "Rumble in the Bronx."  It's a really fun movie with a lot of great and inventive action sequences.  The ending sequence with the hovercraft is pretty awesome.
If somebody asked me to recommend them a kung fu film, this would not be one of them.  This is an action movie.  There's kung fu style fighting, but it's more about stunts and action than people going toe-to-toe in a martial arts showdown.  For an action movie, it is great.

A pretty good pre-70s kung fu movie. Pretty bloody and great sets. The action wasn't my cup of tea, but it wasn't bad. I think people who like swordfighting will like it. I prefer hand-to-hand combat. Still, this is a classic martial arts movie and a has a really nice remastering from the Shaw Bros. I don't know if all of the Shaw Bros. movies look this nice now, but I've seen a lot that are beautiful.

Ninjas kill Shô Kosugi's family, so he heads to America with his son Kane. He opens a doll shop, but some creep (who is also a murderous ninja and maybe the one who killed Kosugi's family) puts heroin inside of the dolls. A murderous ninja kils people. Kosugi eventually has to fight and kill him.
This is a very 80s movie. If you like the 80s, ninjas or heroin, this is the movie for you. Very over-the-top and silly. The heroin in the doll trick has become almost a cliche. It never works, but it's always funny and blatant. This movie is very ridiculous. Oh yeah, Kane is a ninja too.

Kill Bill is based heavily on this film, in theme and several of the scenes are very similar. Of course, Kill Bill has much more dialogue. This movie is fantastic. I knew I would like it, but I was somewhat hesitant to watch it because of the rape. Luckily, they don't show too much of the rape, it's just the catalyst of the story. This movie is very gory for a kung fu flick. You usually don't see fountains of blood spraying in these kinds of movies, but you should. Watch it.

This is an incredibly silly parody of old school kung fu films, and it's very effective in that regard. The opening sequence is hilarious, a parody of the traditional demonstration open. After that it slows down a bit, but not too much. It remains silly and fun throughout. The usual story (obviously): a young man pretends to be great at kung fu, then a beggar makes him great at it and they fight the bad guys.
While I do like this movie, I am only giving it a 7. I know that isn't a low number. I cannot recommend this to everybody, just those of you that enjoy old school kung fu films. Otherwise, don't even waste your time. There are tons of insane moments that will entertain anybody, but the casual viewer would miss out on all of the send ups of the kung fu tropes.
While my girlfriend and I watched this movie there was an insane storm. I had to even stop the movie for 30 minutes because she wanted to go into the basement. This made the movie seem so long. I recommend that you don't do that.
I own this movie on DVD and VHS.

This was pretty good. Sadly, I wasn't paying as much attention as I should. I watched all of the fight scenes and they were pretty strong. The title, Instant Kung Fu Man, is pretty outrageous. Oh, I rated this movie right after I watched it (3 days ago). So the ratings stands, although the review is awful.

Sammo, Jackie Chan and Yuen Baio team up once again in this kung fu comedy. Jackie plays a womanizing lawyer who falls in love with the cousin of a girl he's having a case against. Sammo and Yuen Baio are friends of Jackie's who are trying to help him spy on the girl. Jackie works for a chemical corporation and the girl is claiming that they're killing all of her fish.
This flick is filled with silly comedy and excellent fighting. Jackie Chan is at his best, fighting very fluidly (noticed how jerky the fights can be after watching some other kung fu flicks recently) and fast. The plot is above average for a Jackie Chan movie. While I do tend to prefer the period kung fu movies, I still really like Jackie Chan. Sammo and Yuen Baio are also excellent. Yuen Baio does some great acrobatics. Neither do as much fighting as Chan, sadly.

A young kung fu enthusiast travels around looking for a master. He needs his master to be able to beat him, but his kung fu is too good. That is until he ends up at a Shaolin temple. The problem is the Shaolin monks aren't accepting students because their last student was a traitor. Said student is trying to kill them. Eventually their only course of action is to accept the new student.
Usually I don't get too wrapped up in the plots of a kung fu movie, but this had a pretty interesting one that allowed for loads of fighting. The fighting was good, but nothing spectacular. This isn't a "must see" and doesn't really stand out that much (although the story and fighting are entertaining), but it's worth watching if you're into kung fu flicks.

This is a very fun kung fu comedy. Sammo is great as usual. His choreography is especially good. The fight scenes are really fun, although maybe not quite as frequent as I'd like, although I'd like a movie to be about 75% fights. This is definitely a movie you should watch if you like old school kung fu flicks.

A gymnast agrees to enter into a dangerous medieval style obstacle course (think of American Gladiators). He trains in the deadly art of karate and soon he's kicking and spinning around on bars during fights. He finds out this deadly game is somewhat crooked, but decides to win it any way. Pure 80s crap.
Going into this movie I was hoping for some excellent gymnastic-style fights. That isn't quite what I got, but it's not all that bad. The protagonist isn't a very exciting character, somewhat wooden even. The story is very action packed, but obviously absurd. This is the movies strong point. The plot is so over-the-top that you can't help but enjoy it. If you like "good" movie and hate "bad" action movie from the 80s then it should be a no-brainer to stay away from this one. If you like to watch bad movies, this is a perfect one to check out once you've exhausted the classics.

The plot is pretty fair, but it honestly doesn't matter. This is a kung fu film and that's what I want to see. This has some really excellent fight scenes and is directed by the master of kung fu choreography, Yuen Woo-ping. This is a wire-fu movie and has a similar feel as Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. If that piques your interest at all then see it. If you don't want to see people fighting then watch Leave it to Beaver (fast forward through the parts with Eddie Haskel).

This is an outrageously bad and kitschy flick directed by the horrible director Godfrey Ho. In this film ninjas are still assassins, but they are the kind of assassins that wear pink, red or yellow. Now exactly the colors I'd pick if I wanted to secretly assassinate somebody.



These two ninjas aren't doing anything in secret.
While Ivan the Red and Ninja Master Gordon prepare to do battle. NMG's protege Billy has his hands full with some local thugs that (and I could be wrong about this) are lead by Ivan the Red.
The fight scenes aren't too shabby, but the story, look of the film and the outrageous costumes are so ridiculous. If you and your friends get together to watch bad movies, this should jump to the top of your queue. It's fun, silly, has awesome music and the ninjas have the word "ninja" printed on their headbands just in case you forget what they are. This is so bad, see it.

Akira Saito (Shô Kosugi)and his family move to America from Japan to open a restaurant. A couple crooked cops store stolen goods in the back of their shop including the Van Atta necklace. One of the cops decides to keep the necklace for himself, leaving a syndicate boss trying to get it back from the restaurant's previous owner and then after the Saitos.
Limehouse has one of Akira's son kidnapped. Akira, secretly a ninja, rescues his son, but pisses off the syndicate. The syndicate begins to turn the screws on the Saito family. They hit one of Akira's sons and his wife with a car, putting them in critical condition.
Akira heads to Limehouse's hideout and kills a lot of his henchmen. He confronts Limehouse telling him that if he doesn't stay away then he'll pray for death (like the title of the movie!). Limehouse, in an act of defiance, commits cry-for-help style suicide, putting him in the same hospital as the injured Saito's.
Limehouse kills Akira's wife, and nearly kills his son. Akira and his other son have a montage over a really hilariously bad song. Then they lead Limehouse and his crew into a warehouse their old (dead) landlord owned. Akira does some ninja stuff and kills everybody.
Another 80s action movie that drips with ridiculousness and cheese. There are many laughable moments, but that's what makes movies like this so fun. Shô Kosugi isn't a particularly good actor, but that doesn't necessarily matter in this style of overblown action movie. What matters is that some stuff explodes, people get beat up by a ninja and there's a montage with a song that is about ninjas, but still doesn't quite fit the tone of the flick. Definitely worth checking out, if you're looking for a mindless, silly action movie.

Jackie Chan stars as a secret agent, who is a mixture of Jackie Chan (obviously), James Bond and Indiana Jones. He teams up with a couple of ladies to find Nazi gold hidden in the desert. The women get into trouble and Jackie has to get them out (pretty much throughout the whole movie).
A very solid and fun action/adventure movie from Chan. The final fight in a wind tunnel is cool and inventive and a lot of the other action/fight scenes are fast paced and fun. Lots of silly humor and slapstick. One of Jackie Chan's best films.

A group of bandits hiding out in a temple kidnap the son of a governor. To get him back they must exchange an ally of theirs they have imprisoned. The govenor's daughter, Golden Swallow, seeks the bandits out. She meets a drunk who also happens to be a kung fu master. He helps her along her journey. The bandits' leader happens to be the drunk's brother. Golden Swallow must get her brother back while the drunk must avenge the death of his master, who was killed by his brother.
This is considered to be one of the best Hong Kong movies ever, and with reason. This movie is a kung fu masterpiece. Cheng Pei-pei (Crouching Tiger, Hidden Drago) is great in general, and is awesome in this. In a lot of ways this movie is like Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, but lacked the special effects. There's a scene where the drunk and Cheng Pei-pei leap from rooftops, but instead of seeing them float like in Crouching Tiger, it's all jump cuts. Not that it's a bad thing, it's just an example.
This film is superbly made. The DVD has a beautiful digital transfer that makes it look like it was made last year and not in 1966. The story is good and it doesn't get bogged down by too many characters and too much plot to keep track of like a lot of kung fu films I've seen. This is a true masterpiece and required viewing for kung fu film fans and probably for film fans in general.

The protector is about a Thai man who raises elephants and learns the Muay Thai fighting style in order to protect them from poachers and such. When his grandfather is gunned down and two of his elephants are stolen, he heads to Australia to get them back.
While some of this movie is a bit on the dumb side, mainly a fight involving people on bicycles and motorcycles flipping over our hero while kicking at him. Other than that it remains pretty strong. There are tons of fights with people who cannot even come close to landing a punch on the hero. He merely runs through 95% of those he fights. It's a pretty lightweight martial arts movie, with a different kind of story. Worth a watch, but it's pretty silly.

Mad Monkey Kung Fu is the kind of movie that it takes some time to get into. All of the best fights are in the last third of the film. This movie, like most kung fu movies, is about revenge.
A stage performer is framed for rape(!) by the head of a school (or possibly gang, it's hard to tell). They beat his hands until he's crippled.
That performer has become poor and sells candy while performing a monkey show for kids. He's still having trouble with the same gang, who are now forcing him to pay to perform his monkey show. A young man named Little Monkey, gets taught kung fu by the crippled begger. He acts like a monkey and they go and fight the gang.
The plot seems to take forever to move along, but the monkey style fights at the end are really fun. I'd recommend it if you're a big kung fu fan, but Monkey Kung Fu was a lot better.

The sister of a vampire hunter falls in love with a gentle vampire. The vampire hunter gets a new partner, an attractive female one, at that. To fight the vampires they have to take a drink of concentrated vampire blood and then an antidote within a certain period of time. Things go awry and Jackie Chan shows up to get married to a drunk woman (I don't know why).
This is an okay movie. It has really great fight scenes, cheesey special effects, an okay story, but they dwell too much on said story and not enough on the special effects laden fights. There are several fights, but they really stick to the romance. I was looking for Machine Girl and I got Sleepless in Seattle (with vampires and kung fu).
Obviously, if you like romance, vampires and kung fu you pretty much have to see this movie. It's enjoyable, but just don't look for a bit of the ol' ultra violence. It's not here. No real gore, but the fights are pretty badass.

My Kung Fu Sweetheart is the story of a young girl, Phoenix, who is sent off to a kung fu school on Mount Hua. There she learns that her true love will be a man who can see her when it's impossible to be seen. She meets such a man (Dragon, the CEO of the company she works for) when she's scaling the building to avoid being late for work.
Dragon is targeted by an evil kung fu master, White Eyebrows, who has stolen an important textbook from the kung fu academy on Mount Hua. He becomes nearly invincible when he unlocks the power of the text. Dragon is attacked by some of White Eyebrows lackeys, but Phoenix saves him. They team up, along with Phoenix's divorced parents, to defeat White Eyebrows.
This movie is pure HK silliness with a decent amount of kung fu thrown in, along with a lot of gags. This movie has a low score on IMDB (5.8), but it's better than that. It's a fun kung fu romantic comedy with an absurd story. I mean, it's not Before the Devil Knows You're Dead; it's just a fun movie to kill some time and get a few laughs from. That's why I watch movies in the first place.

Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon is a phrase that means to hide your true power. That's what the characters in this movie are all about. It's mostly the story of a young aristocratic girl who has been secretly training since she was 8. Her parents have arranged her marriage and it's set to take place soon. She steals a powerful sword and has Michelle Yeoh and Chow Yun Fat after her.
One of my favorite movies. I love the fight scenes, especially the one in the tree tops. Ang Lee's direction is amazing. The score is perfect. Great story, great action.
