This movie is an undeniable classic. At the time of writing it is ranked #53 on IMDB. That is appropriate, I think. I'm not sure if we can say that The Dark Knight is better, but it could be a toss-up, it's too soon to say.
Humphrey Bogart is a poor man living in Mexico. He is begging men for pesos and using that money to buy food and liquor. He lands a hard labor job and when the man tries to leave without paying him, he and a fellow worker beat the shit out of the man and take the money they deserve. They stay at a hotel where an old man tells them about prospecting. With their newly acquired money, they buy equipment and head off to find some gold. Bogart slowly descends into madness that manifests itself as greed.
Like I said, this is a classic. If you watch this you're going to notice several things that are constantly referenced in pop culture ("We don't need stinking badges" and the prospectors crazy dance for instance). This is a must see movie for all, and not in the way that Suddenly Susan was "Must See TV." This is the real deal.
10/10
