IMDB
Les Carabiniers is Jean-Luc Goddard's surreal anti-war film about two brothers (Michelangelo and Ulysses) who get letters from the king and promises or being able to do whatever they want in war. They eagerly agree to fight and take the opportunity to do whatever they feel like (murder, rape, pillage).
In a way, I guess you could call this a dark comedy. Although, it's not actually very funny, minus one scene where Michelangelo watches his first movie and tries to climb into the screen. This film mostly serves as a collage and loose story about the war in France and who the soldiers behave.
My only real problem with the film is that there are a few scenes that drag a little. When Michelangelo and Ulysses return home they go through postcards with their wives. This scene lasts well over 5 minutes, but it seemed to last forever. Otherwise, I can't say anything negative about this movie. I'm a fan of Goddard and this movie is definitely worth a viewing if you're interested in him at all.
