Shirley MacLaine stars as the titular prostitute who loves the color green. Jack Lemon is Nestor, a police man who raids a hotel full of prostitutes, including Irma. He is fired because he didn't get permission and he was framed for taking bribes. He falls in love with Irma and becomes top pimp. He wants Irma to quit, but they don't have any money. Nestor pretends to be a rich Lord and over pays Irma. To get the money he has to sneak out at night and work several labor intensive jobs leaving him tired. Irma thinks he's cheating on him and decides to take off with the Lord and live in England. Nestor decides to kill off the Lord, but he's arrested for the murder of him!
This movie is good and silly. It's also two and a half hours long, which is just way too long for a comedy. It's excellently directed and has a wonderful cast. MacLaine got her third Academy Award nomination for this film.
