The Front (1976)
Directed by Martin Ritt
Written by Walter Bernstein
IMDB
This film was written and directed by people blacklisted during McCarthyism and also stars several. Woody Allen stars as a schlub who becomes a front for a group of blacklisted writers. As Allen's star begins to rise and the program he works for becomes a hit, he has to deal with communist allegations himself.
A fine film, yet very historically important. The blacklisting of supposed actors and the cowardly naming of names is a historical event that is not touched upon very often. It is not a very funny film, nor is it overly dramatic. I would say it is a comedy with bittersweet (or maybe just bitter) undertones. There is a few laughs and it never really brought me down, but the issue it deals with is pretty heavy. Definitely worth watching if you're interested in McCarthyism or Hollywood politics.
