Rooftops (1989)

Directed by Robert Wise

IMDB

When I was a youngster I went to the theater and saw a trailer for this movie before whatever shit movie was playing in 1989 I saw. Ever since then I have wanted to see Rooftops. I have no idea why.
Rooftops is an 80s movie for sure, but it does have a bit of the 90s grittiness that makes its way into 90s black cinema. Rooftop begins with graffiti and ends with a dance off. In between it's street urchins fighting with a crack dealer. Plus, sticking to the most annoying rule in movies, there is a love story.
I have to admit that I enjoyed this movie on some level. It's not that Rooftops is necessarily good, it just has a late 80s charm. The biggest misstep of the movie is that there is not very much hip hop on the soundtrack, even though there is break dancing and graffiti. If there would have been a hip hop soundtrack I would have gone a full point higher.

6/10

Rating Scale Explanation

The rating scale is simple. 1 is the worst 10 is the best and 5 is mediocre. 5.5 or greater is a movie that I at least find enjoyable. You could also think of 5 as a zero and 1 as a negative 5. I feel like that sounds even more convoluted.
