Ben Stiller is a neurotic scientist, who is in search of his real parents thinking it will relieve him of some of his neurosis. Patricia Arquette is his wife and Tea Leoni is the woman who works for the adoption agency who is taking them across the country to meet his parents. They end up at the wrong people's house twice before finally making it to his real parents' home. They pick up a gay couple that works for the Bureau of Tabacco and Firearms.
David O. Russell seems like an asshole in real life (if you've seen the videos of him and Lily Tomlin yelling at eachother), but he sure can direct a movie. I like his films, and at least he didn't rape a 13 year old like Roman Polanski or have bad twist endings like M. Knight Shyamalan.
This is one of the few times I didn't mind seeing Ben Stiller on the screen, as his natural douchieness works for him instead of against him. Arquette is good as his wife, who is always willing to open up about their poor sex life and Tea Leoni is good as the former dancer working on her doctorate, who is going through a divorce and has sexual tension with Stiller.
Also, Mary Tyler Moore shows her breasts, while wearing a bra, thankfully. Maybe if we could go back to when she was on the Dick Van Dyke show and get her to bare her breasts we'd have something to write home about.
Overall, a funny, well made film about a man eager to solve his problems without actually meeting them head on. This movie is way better than I *Heart* Huckabees. I say leave the existentialism to Kierkagaard and Woody Allen.
