Directed by Robert Wiene
Written by Hans Janowitz and Carl Mayer
AKA: The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari
IMDB
Francis tells the story of his friends Alan and Jane. At a fair, Dr. Caligari presents his somnambulist, Cesare, who can predict the future. He predicts Alan is going to die at dawn and he does. Caligari and Cesare are the suspects. Cesare kidnaps Jane, but dies of exhaustion. Caligari escapes. Francis follows Caligari to a institution where he's the director.
While the story is a little confusing due to its speedy pace, the real star is the crazy askew sets. The scenery in this film is so angular and odd. It's like Dr. Seuss is having a bad acid trip.
I wouldn't go as far to call this a horror movie, although there are elements of the supernatural. Instead I'd call it a thriller. Maybe it just has to do with the pace. Everybody is movie so fast that it's thrilling.
Watch this.
