My Favorite Wife (1940)
Directed by Garson Kanin
Written by Bella Spewack and Sam Spewack
IMDB
When Ellen Arden shows up seven years after disappearing during a boating trip, it sends her recently remarried husband's life into chaos. Her children don't recognize (or really know) her. Her husband's new wife is irate at the lack of attention she's getting from her husband. When Nick Arden learns that his (first) wife wasn't alone on the island it only makes things worse.
This movie is pulled off perfectly. Irene Dunne, who plays the wife returning after seven years, is beautiful and hilarious. Cary Grant is a great comedic actor, especially in this kind of screwball comedy. Same director as Adam's Rib, which I just watched.
I really liked how they handled this film. It could have been played for drama as much as it was played for laughs, but it wasn't. This is a really funny and strong comedy.
10/10
