Ellie Mae, who lives in the bad part of town, Primrose Hill, with her alcoholic father, prostitute mother, annoying sister and horrible grandmother. When she falls in love with a short order cook she runs away from home and hides her past from him. They get married, but he eventually learns of her past. During dinner with her parents, he storms out as her grandmother insults him. He yells at Ellie Mae and she heads back home. When he comes back to see her, her grandmother tells him that she moved to San Fransisco with another man. Things worsen as her mother gets shot "on accident" by her father.
This is a very well acted film, especially by Ginger Rogers. Marjorie Rambeau, who played Ginger Roger's mother was nominated for an Oscar for her role. It has a serious tone at times, but it also has a good amount of humor. Due to the Hays Code the prostitution is handled pretty carefully. Definitely worth a watch.
