Hips, Hips, Hooray! (1934)
Directed by Mark Sandrich
Written by Bert Kalmar, Edward Kaufman and Harry Ruby
IMDB
A couple of scribes from Marx Bros. movies (Bert Kalmar and Harry Ruby) team up again for this farcical slapstick movie.
Bert Wheeler and Robert Woolsey star as a couple of guys who work at a cosmetic company. While hitting on a couple of girls they accidentally take the wrong bag with them, this one containing some securities. Their boss steals the securities, leaving Wheeler and Woolsey on the run. They are on their lam when the cops catch up to them. They steal a race car that belongs to the girls they are dating.
This movie is just completely outrageous and wacky. Wheeler and Woolsey are a pretty good comedy team. Woolsey is Groucho Marx-esque, with his cigar chomping. There are many off-the-wall jokes that you just don't see coming. Unlike most of the other 30s pre-Hays Code comedies I've been watching, this one is actually funny. There is no dramatic edge like the other films. This is just silly fun and very much worth checking out.
