IMDB
In a small Texas town, a group of male friends bond/hang out during their senior year of high school and over the summer. Jeff Bridges and Timothy Bottoms are the main focus, as their lives twist and turn. Bottoms is having an affair with his football coach's wife (Cloris Leachman) and Bridges is having major problems with his girlfriend (Cybill Shepherd). All Shepherd wants to do is lose her virginity, from her mother's urgings.
It may be hard for some people to watch due to it being black and white. I usually do not care about the color of film, but the first few times I attempted to watch this it seemed slow to me. Finally, I decided to watch it off of Netflix Instant Watch because I knew it was a good movie. This is a great movie.
The Last Picture show is an emotional coming of age story focused on a very small town where there's nothing to do but shoot pool and see a movie. I grew up in a similarly small town, although it is a little bigger than the one in the film and has way less tumbleweeds.
My favorite story is the Cloris Leachman/Timothy Bottoms affair. It boils down into a very emotional scene for Leachman and she grabbed an Oscar for her performance. Ben Johnson also won for his performance as Sam, the proprietor of the theater and pool hall.
This is a 70s classic. It is about to leave Netflix Instant Watch on December 1st, 2010. I recommend seeing it before that happens. If you cannot manage that, rent it. It is worth a rental.
