The Gauntlet (1977)
Directed by Clint Eastwood
Written by Michael Butler and Dennis Shryack
IMDB
Clint Eastwood stars and directs this flick about a hard-boiled, by-the-books cop escorting a prostitute from Las Vegas to Phoenix. The prostitute has the odds stacked against her, as the police and mob are both after her. Eastwood vows to get her back safely.
In a way, this is a buddy movie more than a man protecting a woman movie (like Commando). Sondra Locke is really good as the prostitute, who bails out Eastwood as much as he bails her out. Their friendship is born out of both being people who are thrown away (Eastwood by the police, Locke by the police and mob).
The violence is over the top. There aren't gun fights in this movie, just full-on firing squad-style showers of bullets. This movie is worth watching and an interesting take on the "supercop" genre of film.
