Labels: ,
Directed by Robert Greenwald
Written by Richard Christian Danus and Marc Reid Rubel
IMDB

A ludicrous musical about a young artist who earns a living by painting album covers--into bigger versions of album covers painted by somebody else.  He meets a muse (Olivia Newton-John) who directs him toward opening a club with an older guy who knew the muse when he was young.  Yes, an artist is inspired to open a club with an aging jazz musician.
“Xanadu” is neon nonsense.  To me, it falls under the “so-bad-it’s-good” category.  Me enjoyment of this movie is also aided by my newly discovered fondness of Olivia Newton-John.  She is pretty good in this.  Gene Kelly plays the jazz musician and does some fine dancing.  The main lead is the guy from “The Warriors” and he’s a complete doofus.  He is so hilariously bad.  Really entertaining, though completely idiotic and silly.  It meanders like nobody’s business.  The musical numbers come out of nowhere and serve almost no purpose, but they’re pretty good and inventively presented.  Goofy.

Rating Scale Explanation

The rating scale is simple. 1 is the worst 10 is the best and 5 is mediocre. 5.5 or greater is a movie that I at least find enjoyable. You could also think of 5 as a zero and 1 as a negative 5. I feel like that sounds even more convoluted.
