The Man With the Screaming Brain is Bruce Campbell's directorial debut. He plays a business man who is visiting Bulgaria in order to invest in the nearly build subway system. A mysterious gypsy woman steals ring he bought for his wife, and when he goes to get it back from her she hits him in the head with a pipe killing him. His cab driver, a former lover of the gypsy woman, but she ends up killing him, too. Bruce's wife comes after the gypsy woman, only to end up being pushed down a flight of stairs and dying.
A scientist, who has developed a new technique to bring a brain back to life takes their bodies and uses a piece of the cab driver's brain to fill-in a missing chunk of Bruce's brain. The problem being that he has an internal dialogue with the cab driver, who is in control of the right side of his body. They set out to kill the woman that murdered them.
Campbell's wife is also stolen by the scientist, who can't bring her back to life due to the damage to her body caused by the fall down the stairs. His assistant (played by Ted Raimi) suggests putting the brain in his robot's body. The scientist agrees. When they boot her up, she escapes to kill the woman who killed her.
This movie starts off a bit slow. Maybe the first 20 minutes are a bit dry and seem like the movie is going to go nowhere. Once Bruce Campbell has the inner dialogue, he begins to fight with himself resulting in some hilarious physical comedy and some decent lines. The robot woman just walking made me laugh. Ted Raimi is very funny in his role and performs a rap for the end credits.
I would love to give this movie a higher rating, but this is Bruce's first feature film (as a director). He has a hard time directing the action, not that it's all bad. There are some really poorly choreographed fight scenes. When Campbell is fighting himself it's very funny, as he's a great physical comedian. The one-liners could have been more rampant, but that's not a big deal.
If you're a fan of Bruce Campbell, then there is absolutely no reason not to check this movie out. It's pretty much exactly what you'd expect, minus the first 20 minutes. I'm looking forward to watching My Name is Bruce after seeing this, although I've seen mixed reviews.
