IMDB
Smile is about the Young American Miss beauty contest, which judges the best high school girls of California. Barbara Feldon stars as the ring leader of the young women. Bruce Dern is a judge, used car salesman and best friend of Feldon's husband. Feldon's husband is disillusioned with his marriage and has become a bitter alcoholic. Dern's son and his friends are bent on getting some nude pictures of the young ladies.
Smile is a decent movie and a PG in 75 is more like an R of today. This movie isn't very adult, but it's got plenty of swearing and a bit of nudity, which was a pleasant surprise. One thing I definitely like about the movie was the way Dern's son and his friends talked. It was pretty much how teens talk. You don't get that a lot today because it's not PC for kids to use the word "faggot" even if it's realistic.
The problem I had with this movie, though, is that it stuck to the beauty pageant more than the actual story. There could have been more story built around the pageant and with the young women. The last 40 minutes are dominated by the pageant itself and could have used a bit of story to carry it.
Overall, I didn't hate it, and maybe even liked it a little. Above average. The reason I watched it is because of Barbara Feldon, but unfortunately she is getting old during this movie. I'd rather see her young and as a contestant herself. Oh well.
