A rich, but dumb couple go to Washington D.C. for some business, that involves buying a congressman. Scrap iron tycoon Harry, played by Broderick Crawford, gets a reporter to teach his fiancee, Billie (Judy Holiday), how to "talk good."
Billie and the reporter start having feelings for each other, but it's soon put on the back burner as the reporter just wants to teach her. Billie becomes increasingly hungry for knowledge. Soon she becomes a thorn in Harry's side as she begins asking questions about his unethical business practices.
This is a fantastic film. The progression of the Billie character throughout the film is realistic. She never becomes a genius, she just merely knows a little more and has a slightly improved vocabulary.
Judy Holiday won an Oscar for her role, which was well deserved. She essentially carries this entire movie. George Cukor is a great director and every movie I've seen by him is a winner. I'm sure this doesn't keep up since he's directed 66 movies and surely his later ones may end up being duds. Still, this is a fantastic movie that is highly recommended.
