I had a bad taste left in my mouth after watching Godzilla, King of All Monster, which is this movie clipped up and Raymond Burr forcefully added. At most, half of this movie survives into King of All Monsters.
Gojira begins with a boat being attacked. Then some more boats are taken down mysteriously. We soon learn about the legend of Godzilla, the prehistoric monster that occasionally rises from the water to feed on humans.
A zoologist is trying to save Godzilla, until he witnesses his destruction firsthand. A doctor has developed an "oxygen destroyer" which he never wants anybody to know about, but shares with the zoologist's daughter. After she witnesses Godzilla destroying buildings, she quickly brakes her promise to the doctor about never telling anybody about his oxygen-based weapon.
The doctor reluctantly agrees to use the destroyer on Godzilla after seeing children praying on television. He insists that he be allowed to detonate the oxygen destroyer himself. It works and Godzilla is destroyed (for now).
What a difference Raymond Burr makes. When he's not hammered into Gojira, this movie ends up being very atmospheric and full of destruction. While the film focuses on the zoologist, his daughter and the doctor who created the oxygen destroyer, it mostly offers clips of Godzilla stomping on buildings and fallout from the destruction.
This is a masterpiece. I can see how some stuffier types who think Citizen Kane is the greatest movie ever made would possibly discredit this giant radiated monster destroying Tokyo movie. I especially enjoyed the ending, where they actually kill Godzilla. I hate when movies set up for a sequel that may or may not come.
10/10
