A professor at a Hebrew school faces trying times. His wife is leaving him, his brother has a gambling problem and his children constantly fight. He feels like his life is falling apart, yet through it all he tries to remain calm. I would have been really pissed, personally.
The Coen brothers are possibly the best modern American filmmakers. Much like Woody Allen, they have a perpetual output and nearly all of their films are at least good. A Serious Man isn't as good as, say, Fargo. It might not be quite as enjoyable as Burn After Reading even, but it's still great. The theme is that life is a paradox. I think that plays out pretty well.
This movie was nominated for Best Picture at the 2010 Academy Awards. I'm not sure it would have been nominated had there not been 10 nominees this year (which I'm glad they're doing now, although the Oscars are a fucking bore and practically meaningless). This is the only film I've seen that was nominated for Best Picture so far.
