Tootsie (1982)
Directed by Sydney Pollack
Written by Murray Schisgal and Larry Gelbart
IMDB
Dustin Hoffman stars as a character actor who is having trouble getting work. When his good friend gets passed over for a part on a soap because she wasn't tough enough, he decides to audition for that part in drag. He gets the job and now has to act like his female character all the time. It gets even more difficult when he's falling in love with one of his co-stars who thinks he's a woman.
If somebody had told me Bill Murray was in this movie I would have watched it a long time ago. Seriously, nobody even mentions Bill Murray when they talk about Tootsie.
Dustin Hoffman does an amazing job playing different levels of his character (in drag, in drag as a character on a soap). Some people (myself included) write this movie off as being another drag movie like Too Wong Foo or Some Like it Hot, but it's really about acting not dressing like a lady.
