Breakin' (1984)

Labels: ,

Directed by Joel Silberg
Written by Charles Parker, Allen DeBevoise and Gerald Scaife
IMDB

A jazz dancer meets up with a couple of street dancers and falls in love with break dancing. They head toward stardom while defeating suckas in dance-offs. Yeah, it's a story as old as humanity.
This was an incessantly stupid film. I'm not a big fan of dance movies in the first place. There was way more dancing than story. As far as dance movies go, I suppose this was better than Striptease, but worse than Showgirls (Showgirls tries to be a good movie).
The dialogue in this flick is horrible, but it offers some unintentional laughs. While I definitely didn't enjoy this movie, I am glad I watched it. I may even watch the sequel, which sounds like it has a better story (a youth center is going to be torn down and only the break dancers can save it).
For the kids out there, think about how lucky you have it. In the 1980s this is what passed for a good movie. Now you have 3D remakes of what passed for a good movie in the 80s.

5.5/10

Rating Scale Explanation

The rating scale is simple. 1 is the worst 10 is the best and 5 is mediocre. 5.5 or greater is a movie that I at least find enjoyable. You could also think of 5 as a zero and 1 as a negative 5. I feel like that sounds even more convoluted.
