IMDB
Albert Brooks stars as himself. He gets a call from the US government and is asked to go over to India and Pakistan to find out what makes muslims laugh. He is also asked to present a 500 page report after he finishes his research.
When he, along with two beauracrats, gets to India, he has a hard time getting answers from the people in the street. He hires an assistant, an Indian woman who is having trouble with her boyfriend. Her boyfriend thinks that she is falling in love with Brooks.
Eventually, Albert Brooks decides to put on a comedy show, which he can use to judge what makes them laugh. He goes through a few of his classic stand-up bits, but flops big time. Meanwhile, the Indian government is keeping their eyes on him, thinking that he is a spy for Pakistan.
This is a solid and fairly funny film. It is a little too clever and subtle to be uproariously funny, but I still enjoyed it. I love Albert Brooks and have enjoyed every one of his films I have seen. This film is definitely worth seeing, and I think a lot of people will end up watching it just based on the title. Hopefully that will lead to more A. Brooks comedy features.
