The
mother and wife of a samurai fighting in a war live in a swamp, killing
lost samurai and stealing their gear in order to buy food. When a
neighbor returns home and tells them of their husband/son’s death, the
widow takes up with him. Fearing that she will lose her accomplice, the
mother tries to scare her off by tales of purgatory.
A
very odd, but masterfully made film. The ending was quite bizarre.
The pacing is deliberate, but sets a tone. Lots of close ups of grass,
which I actually enjoy, so that’s a plus to me. A fine film.
