John Wayne is the sherriff of a old west town. When he arrests a man for murder, he has to contend with the hired guns of his well-off brother. Wayne is joined by Dean Martin (Dude, a Mexican), Walter Brennan (the cripled Stumpy) and Ricky Nelson (Colorado). Wayne also finds time to fall in love with Angie Dickenson.
A long, but very excellent Western. I don't know if I would go as far as to call it a "shoot 'em up," but it does have a lot of shooting in it.
Apparently, Wayne and Hawkes made this film as an answer to "High Noon," according to the featured review on IMDB. Instead of the sherriff going around and begging for help, he is just good enough to face the bad guys on his own. Although, that is mostly what ends up happening in "High Noon," and that movie is more about being desserted when you're in need than it is being weak. Either way, both are great films.
If you're looking for a more deliberate paced movie (or a western) with more of a focus on character development than shooting, this is good. I wasn't necessarily looking for that, but still dug it. I didn't mind Dean Martin or Ricky Nelson at all. I thought they were both pretty good, but I'm not 100 years old so I don't remember Ricky Neslon being on Ozzie and Harriet.
9/10
